Why a boat for Barbie? Clark Sailsbury has been into R/C models since 1983, and with 3 daughters always had Barbie dolls that they played with, and they saw him playing with R/C models of various sorts the entire time that they were growing up. On more than one occasion, they tried to make Barbie fit in various models (mostly planes and boats) that I had built. The basic problem was always the same. Her scale was always just a little too big for the models. He finally decided to build a boat that would truly fit a real Barbie, although we still had to take off her legs. I thought it would be fun to build a boat that would give Barbie a thrill. Barbie is about 1/7th scale, so when her boat is going 20 mph, it will seem to her like 140 mph, and that should be a thrill to anyone!
What’s in a Short Kit? – A short kit usually contains, where available, the plan, the laser/CNC cut wood pack, additional wood pack, canopy, cowl or any other available Glass Fibre or plastic moulded items.
What’s in a Laser or CNC Cut Wood Pack? – A CNC or laser cut wood pack contains most, if not all, of the intricately shaped parts shown on the plan, which would be difficult or time-consuming to cut out by hand. It does not contain any sheet or strip wood, which you will need to buy separately. Alternatively, you can purchase an Additional Wood Pack, if available. Our Laser or CNC Cut Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and lite ply and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model, such as hardwoods, metals and GRP sheets.
Notes on using the Laser Cut Wood Pack – The Sarik laser cut wood pack for this model makes construction very easy. It is a good idea to sand all edges before glueing to remove any traces of burning caused by the laser cutting process. Also, to create a smooth surface on panels with scarf joints it is an idea to coat the joints with filler like P38 and rub smooth when set. The side panels for the hull and deck are slightly oversize and need sanding down when fitted. The windscreen, cut from a piece of 1 mm clear Plasticard (NOT included in Wood Pack) is mounted on the outside of the windscreen framework and screwed in place.
