The Boeing PT-17 is probably one of the best-known American biplanes and currently the most numerous. The aircraft was designed by Harold Zipp and Jack Clark, and the prototype Model 70 appeared in 1933. By 1945 over 10,000 had been built for the US Army and US Navy, and when they were retired from military use they flooded into civilian use – mainly for agricultural use. They are now prized by vintage aircraft enthusiasts and still fly in great numbers.
