The Hawker Hurricane was the first RAF monoplane fighter with an enclosed cockpit and retractable undercarriage. It was also the first fighter capable of a level speed in excess of 300 mph and the first eight-gun fighter in service with the RAF. The first production Hurricane Mk I was delivered in 1937 and nearly 500 were in squadron service by the outbreak of the WWII. During the Battle of Britain, Hurricanes shot down far more enemy aircraft than the more famous Spitfire.
