Full Description

The Type 30 Prefect was produced by the Slingsby firm in 1948 and was intended as a replacement for the Grunau Baby, a subject that has been much more widely modelled. At 1:6 scale and with a 2.3-meter wingspan this is a perfect stablemate for the slightly smaller Wolf previously published in RCM&E.

There are some minor deviations from the scale. The tailplane struts are absent for the reason of drag and convenient rigging. The center section is a little wider to allow for the servo leads. The airbrakes have been left out entirely, with upgoing ailerons providing adequate glide path control.

With a model of this size, free-flight rules can apply. Thus, it was that the Prefect first tasted the air from a simple hand launch on the flat over long grass. The result was a surprisingly long, flat glide, in a rather similar fashion to that of the Wolf. This augured well for the first flight proper, which took place via aero tow. The Prefect has proved to be a sweet flier, with no vices and a decent ability to thermal. Although there are no brakes, the up-going ailerons give excellent glide path control. Add to this the fact that this model has an attractive appearance and you will soon forget the small size – especially if retrieving it from the bottom of the slope!

The Full Size Slingsby’s Type 30 Prefect from 1948 was intended as a replacement for the Grunau Baby. Designed by Chris Williams at sixth scale and with a 2.3m span this is the perfect stablemate for the slightly smaller Wolf.

What’s in an Additional Wood Pack?

Our Additional Wood Packs contain MOST of the necessary sheet and strip wood needed to complete a model being built from a Sarik Hobbies plan and using the associated Laser Cut Wood Pack, if available. We stock a wide range of balsa, ply and spruce in popular sheet and strip sizes but even so we cannot guarantee to be able to supply all the wood necessary to complete each model. So some additional purchases may be required from other modeling wood stockists if not available from Sarik Hobbies. Our Additional Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and spruce wood in the stock sizes as used by our suppliers and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model such as hardwoods, metals & GRP sheets.
