Full Description

Star Baby works out at 5.9 lb ready to sail but is only 6″ shorter than its forebear. (For the benefit of metric readers that’s about 2.68 kg and 712 mm) A rough (ish) draught was sent to well-known top-class modeller Vic Driscoll who built a prototype – the model in the photographs – and conducted sailing trials. His verdict – “easy to build…nice and stable, turns on a tanner…” In fact, the model seems to comfortably outsail other boats of similar size and/or displacement in virtually any weight of wind. Incidentally, the purpose of the cabin is to elevate the access hatch to a relatively splash-free height, an advantage in choppy water, but of course, it does give a suggestion of a semi-scale appearance. The cabin windows should be glazed or, if regular rough-water sailing is envisaged, even simply painted on. It would be possible to omit any superstructure, leaving just a flush deck, but this would mean that steps would be required to waterproof any hatches.

Being a smaller size will make transport and storage much easier. Performance on the water is described as excellent.

The larger version is called Starlet, also designed by Vic Smeed: https://www.sarikhobbies.com/product/starlet-mm1048/

What’s in a Laser or CNC Cut Wood Pack?

A CNC or Laser Cut Wood Pack contains most, if not all, of the intricately shaped parts shown on the plan, which would be difficult or time-consuming to cut out by hand. It does not contain any sheet or strip wood, which you will need to buy separately. Alternatively, you can purchase an Additional Wood Pack, if available. Our Laser or CNC Cut Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply & lite ply and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model, such as hardwoods, metals & GRP sheets.

What’s in an Additional Wood Pack?

Our Additional Wood Packs contain MOST of the necessary sheet and strip wood needed to complete a model being built from a Sarik Hobbies plan and using the associated Laser Cut Wood Pack, if available. We stock a wide range of balsa, ply and spruce in popular sheet and strip sizes but even so we cannot guarantee to be able to supply all the wood necessary to complete each model. So some additional purchases may be required from other modeling wood stockists if not available from Sarik Hobbies. Our Additional Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and spruce wood in the stock sizes as used by our suppliers and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model such as hardwoods, metals & GRP sheets. What’s in a Short Kit?

A short kit usually contains, where available, the plan, the laser/CNC cut wood pack, additional wood pack, canopy, cowl or any other available Glass Fibre or plastic moulded items.
