The Full Size: The Messerschmitt Me 262 first flew in 1941, and entered operational service with the Luftwaffe as the worlds’ first jet fighter in 1944. Much faster than the allied piston engined fighters then in use and very heavily armed, the Me 262 had the potential to inflict heavy losses on the British and American bomber forces. However by that stage of the war the damage being inflicted on German industry by air attacks meant that the revolutionary Jumo 004 engines had to be made from inferior materials and were extremely unreliable. There were also fuel shortages, a lack of experienced pilots and constant allied attacks on the Me 262 airfields to contend with. In all, whilst an outstanding design, the Me 262 was too little too late for Nazi Germany and it had no real impact on the outcome of the war.
The model is of all-wood construction, but a moulded cockpit canopy is available. A laser-cut wood-pack is available that contains most of the shaped wood parts needed such as fuselage formers and wing ribs. This saves a great deal of time in the build and ensures accuracy, but you will need to buy additional sheet and strip wood to complete the model, as well as all the hardware needed.
What’s in a Laser or CNC Cut Wood Pack? – A CNC or laser cut wood pack contains most, if not all, of the intricately shaped parts shown on the plan, which would be difficult or time-consuming to cut out by hand. It does not contain any sheet or strip wood, which you will need to buy separately. Alternatively, you can purchase an Additional Wood Pack, if available. Our Laser or CNC Cut Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and lite ply and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model, such as hardwoods, metals and GRP sheets.
What’s in an Additional Wood Pack? – Our Additional Wood Packs contain MOST of the necessary sheet and strip wood needed to complete a model being built from a Sarik Hobbies plan and using the associated laser cut wood pack, if available. We stock a wide range of balsa, ply and spruce in popular sheet and strip sizes but even so we cannot guarantee to be able to supply all the wood necessary to complete each model. So some additional purchases may be required from other modelling wood stockists if not available from Sarik Hobbies. Our Additional Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and spruce wood in the stock sizes as used by our suppliers and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model such as hardwoods, metals and GRP sheet.
